As a maternity photographer in OKC, I often get asked when the best time is to schedule maternity photos. And while there are general guidelines, sometimes life has its own plans.
Lauren and Steven booked their session early. At the time, we laughed about how organized they were. But as it turned out, their sweet boy made his arrival much earlier than expected. Thankfully, he’s now home and growing beautifully—but I’m so grateful we captured their photos when we did.
Their session has taken on a whole new meaning. It’s a glimpse of the anticipation, the connection, and the love that was already so present before they ever held him in their arms.
When to Schedule Maternity Photos
Generally, the ideal time for maternity photos is between 28–34 weeks—that sweet spot where your bump is beautifully visible, but you’re still comfortable enough to move and pose.
But as Lauren and Steven’s story reminds us, it’s perfectly okay (and sometimes wise!) to plan a bit earlier—especially if you’re expecting your first and not sure what the final weeks might bring.
What to Wear for Your Maternity Session
The goal is to feel beautiful, comfortable, and fully yourself. Here are a few wardrobe tips that always photograph well:
- Soft, flowing fabrics that move gently in the wind (think dresses with movement)
- Form-fitting pieces that highlight your bump in a flattering way
- Neutral or earth tones that keep the focus on your connection, not the clothes
- Minimal patterns to avoid distraction in your final images
I always offer styling guidance to help you choose outfits that feel aligned with your personal style and the overall vibe of the session.
Choosing the Right Location: Studio, Outdoor, or In-Home?
There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to location. Each option offers something unique:
- Outdoor sessions (like Lauren and Steven’s) are perfect for those drawn to golden light, open skies, and natural backdrops.
- Studio sessions give a more intimate, editorial feel—with beautiful light and minimal distractions.
- In-home sessions are cozy, comfortable, and deeply personal, especially meaningful if this is your first baby and you’re already dreaming of your future life at home together.
When we plan your session, I’ll help you choose a setting that fits your story best.
Why Document This Season
The transition from two to three can feel beautifully bittersweet. There’s joy, excitement, and often a quiet sense of letting go—of who you were as a couple, and who you’re becoming as a family.
Photos don’t just capture how you looked. They hold space for how this time felt: the anticipation, the stillness, the quiet hope wrapped around each moment.
As a maternity photographer in OKC, I’ve seen how deeply families treasure these images—especially once their little one arrives and everything changes overnight. It’s a chance to remember how it all began.

Whether you’re celebrating your first baby or your fifth, maternity photos are a way to honor this tender chapter of waiting, wondering, and growing—together.
If you’re looking for a maternity photographer in OKC who creates intentional, meaningful sessions that feel beautifully personal, I’d be honored to tell your story.
