What to Bring: Everything You Need for an Outdoor Family Session in Oklahoma City

Picture this: You finally got everyone dressed, the baby skipped their nap but seems happy enough, and you made it out the door on time (which honestly deserves a trophy).

Then 15 minutes into your session… someone spills. Or trips. Or decides they hate their shoes.

I’ve seen it all — and I promise, it’s okay.

One of my sweet families once had a little wardrobe situation early in their session. But because mom had tossed an extra outfit in the car (just in case), we swapped it out and kept going like nothing happened. Total save.

Outdoor family sessions in Oklahoma City are beautiful — but with little kids, a tiny bit of prep goes a long way. So let’s talk about what to bring so you can relax and actually enjoy your session.

Setting the Stage

I get it — planning a family session can feel a little overwhelming. What if someone melts down? What if you forget something? What if your kids suddenly decide they hate smiling?

Take a deep breath. You’re not alone. Outdoor sessions are some of my favorites because they give kids room to move, explore, and just be themselves. And with a little prep, your Oklahoma City outdoor family session can be totally stress-free and full of laughter.

Plan for the Unexpected (Because…Kids)

Extra outfits
If your little ones are under two, bring a backup outfit. Even if you think you won’t need it. Trust me on this one. Spills, grass stains, diaper leaks — they happen. Having a plan B keeps the session moving and keeps you from stressing.

Wardrobe touch-ups
Toss wrinkle spray, a comb, and any hair accessories in your bag. Oklahoma wind can be unpredictable, so having a clip or tie handy can save the day. And comfy shoes are a must — we might walk a little to get to that golden light.

Stay Prepared and Comfortable
Session Kit in the Car: Stock your car with essentials like a retouch makeup kit, hairspray, baby wipes, diapers, and water bottles. These small items can make a big difference.

Coordinate with Care: Bring a blanket that complements your family’s outfits. Not only can it add a comfortable element to your session, but it also looks great in photos.

Engourage Natural Moments

The best photos never come from standing perfectly still and smiling at the camera.

They happen when you scoop your toddler up mid-giggle.
When your kids run toward you.
When you tickle tiny toes and get those real belly laughs.

I’ll guide you the whole time, but I promise — the magic is in the in-between moments. Let them explore. Let them twirl. Let them be themselves.

My love for photography began in a high school darkroom, watching images slowly appear. Since then, I’ve been drawn to quiet, meaningful moments rooted in connection and home. As a mother of three and a film photographer, I approach each story with care, seeking what’s honest and lasting.

Here on the blog, you’ll find recent sessions, tips, and reflections—whether you’re a fellow creative, a brand, or a mother wanting to capture this season. I hope it leaves you inspired and more in love with your own story.
